Ashwini is the first nakshatra and is contained within Mesha/Aries. The nakshatra is ruled be Ketu. Since Aries is ruled by Mars and Ketu also behaves like Mars, a Mars/Ketu fire is evident in the persons born under the influence of Ashwini or any actions that are associated with it.
Sun is exalted in this nakshatra. In fact, the highest point of exaltation of Sun is 10° Aries, which is within this Ashwini nakshatra, marking its importance. When Sun enters this nakshatra, it is around 2nd and 3rd week of April. It is the end of spring and beginning of summer when we still like the warmth of Sun and do not associate it with the 45° temperature and sun strokes in the plains of India.
For people who are born with Sun in this nakshatra, they get a king like qualities and authority. They are the leaders and their followers look up to them. They have the aura of Sun. They can never be tied down and will ensure they are always at the forefront.
When Moon is present in this nakshatra, the mind gets these qualities – quick thinking, intelligent, and yet emotions contain the warmth. Hence these folks are very caring and nurturing. They would be good students with a fertile mind and imagination. Jupiter would do well in this nakshtra as well in a horoscope as it would be located 2nd to its house enhancing the qualities of the house where Pisces becomes the sign of the house. Mars would be in swakshetra in this nakshatra and its fiery nature would be enhanced in this nakshatra.
Ashwini is a laghu/kshipra nakshatra that is very fast, very swift. The properties of dynamism are naturally associated with it. Since there is movement associated with Ashwini, it is an auspicious nakshatra for starting anything new that leads to improvement in quality of life – starting short travels for auspicious reasons. Mars is also indicative of fruit laden trees and hence agricultural activities can also be started in this nakshatra. The enterprising nature and the courage of Mars/Ketu combine also means that new business ventures will be successful in this nakshatra. Other activities that can be taken up are – starting to study something new, buying/selling vehicles, buying jewelry, sport activities, etc.
This is a Dharma nakshatra. Sun’s qualities are evident here. Hence, the dharma elements are enhanced – law, responsibility, obligation and inherent honesty.
Ashvini Kumars – the twins are the doctors of Gods in Hindu mythology. They bring health and happiness. They are young, that’s why they are “kumars”. They are the deity for Ashwini Nakshatra. Medical treatment, surgery should be started in this nakshatra. Mars also indicates surgery and hence this association with treatment is also doubled up.
The negative side of Ashwini nakshatra is too much of fiery nature. There is little control on the tongue – which becomes caustic. My way or the high way attitude can cause problems with the person and his relations. The person becomes stubborn and inconsiderate towards others. Saturn does not behave well in this nakshatra, since it is debilitated in Aries, but it has not reached its lowest debilitation point yet. Sun in this nakshatra is exalted and makes the person authoritarian. This can be a good thing as well as a bad thing because such persons are pushy, fiercely ambitious and can become ruthless.
